Champions League Matchround 3 Preview

Written By: Brian Ludden

Two matches of the Champions League are in the books and now we look ahead to Matchday 3, which will begin this week.

Group A:

Matchday 1 Recap:

Bayern Munich did just enough to get all three points on matchday 2, as a 79th-minute winner from Joshua Kimmich gave the defending champions a 2-1 win in front of a reduced crowd of 8,196  at Lokomotiv Moscow. Atletico Madrid also bounced back with a thrilling 3-2 win by a Joao Feliz winner in the 85th minute. Bayern stays at the top of the table, while Atletico Madrid moves up to 2nd.

Matchday 2 Predictions:

Bayern Munich will head to northern Austria to face RB Salzburg, and they should be able to get another win vs. the Austrian champions. Meanwhile, Lokomotiv Moscow will host Atletico Madrid, as both teams will be looking for a win. I expect Atletico Madrid to win this one and remain in second place in the group.

RB Salzburg 0-4 Bayern Munich

Lokomotiv Moscow 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Group B:

Matchday 2 Recap:

Real Madrid looked as if they were going to lose their second straight match in the Champions League, but two late goals from Karim Benzema and Casemiro salvaged a draw vs. Borussia Monchengladbach. Shakhtar Donetsk stayed in full control at the top of the table with a 0-0 draw vs. Inter Milan.

Matchday 3 Predictions:

Shakhtar Donetsk will look to stay undefeated in the group as they host Monchengladbach, and I say that both teams will grab a point. In the other match, Inter will head to Spain as they will face Real Madrid. Both teams need points, and I say that Real Madrid will get their first win of the competition.

Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Borussia Monchengladbach

Real Madrid 2-1 Inter Milan

Group C:

Matchday 2 Recap:

Man City remained in control as they took down Marseille easily by a score of 3-0.  FC Porto also bounced back from their opening match loss, as they knocked off Olympiakos 2-0.

Matchday 3 Predictions:

This time around, Man City will face off against Olympiakos, and the English side should be able to get all three points. In addition, Marseille will head over to Portugal, as they will play FC Porto. This should be a good match, but Porto should be able to get a narrow win.

Man City 3-0 Olympiakos

FC Porto 2-1 Marseille

Group D:

Matchday 2 Recap:

Despite Ajax taking an early lead vs. Atalanta, the Italian side was able to get two goals from Duvan Zapata and the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Meanwhile, Liverpool didn’t exactly crush Midtjylland, but they got the win with goals from Diogo Jota and Mo Salah.

Matchday 3 Predictions:

Liverpool and Atalanta go head-to-head this week in Italy, and that should be one of the more entertaining matches this week. I expect Liverpool to get the win and go to the top of the group, but Atalanta should be able to get the ball in the back of the net and keep the match close. In the group’s other match, Ajax will head north to Denmark to take on Midtjylland.  Ajax should be able to comfortably get their first win of the group stage.

Atalanta 2-3 Liverpool

Midtjylland 0-3 Ajax

Group E:

Matchday 2 Recap:

Chelsea easily defeated Krasnodar by a score of 4-0 from goals by Callum Hudson-Odoi, new additions Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, along with Christian Pulisic. In the group’s other match, a Luuk de Jong goal was enough as Europa League champions Sevilla, knocked off Rennes.

Matchday 3 Predictions:

On Wednesday, Rennes will head to London as they take on Chelsea. Rennes will look to get the upset win, but Chelsea’s attack will be too much, as they should win by multiple goals.  Meanwhile, Krasnodar will travel over 2,000 miles as they head to Sevilla. The Spanish side will look to keep pace with Chelsea, and both teams should be at the top of the table heading into matchday 4.

Chelsea 3-0 Rennes

Sevilla 2-1 Krasnodar

Group F:

Matchday 2 Recap:

A Jadon Sancho penalty and a stoppage-time goal from Erling Haaland was enough for Dortmund, as they got a much-needed 3 points following their matchday 1 loss vs. Lazio. In the group’s other match, Club Brugge and Lazio both earned a point as they drew 1-1 in Belgium.

Matchday 3 Predictions:

Borussia Dortmund will host Club Brugge on Wednesday, before their big match vs. Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker on Saturday. Despite the big match on Saturday, Dortmund will need to focus on Club Brugge, who sits in 2nd place in the group. But, I’m predicting a Dortmund win, as they will move to the top of the group. Across the continent, Lazio will head to Russia as they take on Zenit St. Petersburg. Zenit will be looking to get out of the basement, as they are at the bottom with no points so far. I think this will change, however, and I’m predicting a scoreless draw at Gazprom Arena.

Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Club Brugge

Zenit St. Petersburg 0-0 Lazio

Group G:

Matchday 1 Recap:

We didn’t get to see Ronaldo vs. Messi as we had hoped for, and Barcelona defeated Juventus in a match that everyone had marked on their calendars. Ousmane Dembele gave Barcelona the lead in the 14th minute, while Messi converted a penalty in second-half stoppage time to seal the win. While everyone was watching the previously mentioned match, Ferencvaros grabbed a point late in their match vs. Dynamo Kyiv, as both of those sides got their first point of the competition.

Matchday 3 Predictions:

Juventus will take on Hungarian side Ferencvaros, and they should be able to easily bounce back. Barcelona will likely stay at the top of the group, as they play Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine.

Ferencvaros 0-3 Juventus

Dynamo Kyiv 1-2 Barcelona

Group H:

Matchday 2 Recap:

Manchester United showed that they are all in here in the Champions League, as they dominated RB Leipzig 5-0 at Old Trafford led by a Marcus Rashford hat-trick. In the other match, PSG got a comfortable 2-0 win after second-half goals from Moise Kean.

Matchday 3 Predictions:

In what could be considered a must-win for both sides, PSG takes on RB Leipzig. Both teams enter the game with 3 points each, as they both fell to Man United. I expect PSG to pull off a win here as RB Leipzig will be left scratching their heads. Meanwhile, Man United should ease past Istanbul Basaksehir despite poor domestic results by the former.

RB Leipzig 1-3 PSG

Istanbul Basaksehir 0-3 Man United
