Week 9 of the NFL season kicks off with Thursday Night Football. The 49ers travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers, in a game that could very well go either way. The two teams have met a total of 69 times (including postseason matchups), with the Packers leading the series 36-32-1.
However, this isn’t the usual 49ers team that you normally see. The 49ers have been beaten up bad with injuries this season. QB Jimmy Garoppolo is out with an ankle injury as he was placed on injured reserve. Star TE George Kittle has been declared out for eight weeks with an upper foot injury. Star DE Nick Bosa was declared out for the season with a torn ACL. These are only three out of many injuries that the 49ers have dealt with. So, this puts the pressure on backup QB Nick Mullens, who has shown out in the games he has played this season. Arguably his best game was in Week 3 against the New York Giants when he threw for 343 yards and added 1 touchdown pass.
The Packers have also been hit hard with multiple different issues. Starting RB Aaron Jones has been dealing with a calf injury, and the team is unsure if he will play on Thursday night. Soon after that, the next two running backs in Jamaal Williams and AJ Dillon were ruled out due to COVID protocols. If Aaron Jones does not play, the Packers are left with two running backs in Tyler Ervin and Dexter Williams. With the trade deadline ending on November 3rd, there was a lot of backlash from Packers fans due to the fact that the Packers did not trade for Houston WR Will Fuller V. Packers fans have been asking for new weapons for QB Aaron Rodgers for months now, and they haven’t gotten their wish yet.
The Packers must take advantage of this beat up 49ers team if they want to secure a win. The 49ers currently are ranked 10th in defense, but it is obvious that their defensive front and secondary is not at its full strength. The Packers are coming off of a sad loss to the Minnesota Vikings, as RB Dalvin Cook tore the Green Bay defense apart. He finished the day with 2oo+ scrimmage yards and four touchdowns. The 49ers are also coming in following a loss, at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. Russell Wilson finished the day with 4 touchdowns and 261 total yards. Both of these teams have been dealing with injuries, COVID, and defensive issues. This game could go either way. Although the Packers are missing their top three running backs, I have them defeating the 49ers in this one.
SCORE PREDICTION: 49ers 14 – Packers 28
