Masters Recap: Day 1

Written By: Kellen Sharpe

One of the biggest weekends in sports every year began yesterday as the Masters kicked off. Even if you’re not a golf fan, you understand the legacy of the Masters and may even tune in just because it feels right. This year’s Masters kicked off with a fantastic moment as legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus had the ceremonial first tee shot, already setting this year’s event apart from the others. In the lead at the end of Day 1 is Englishman Paul Casey, who is actually quite a surprise. Casey had finished the past two tournaments 35th and 69th and was cut from the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. The three Americans – Webb Simpson, Xander Schauffele, and Justin Thomas are tied for 2nd. Tiger Woods is in an eight-way tie for 5th with a score of 4 under, keeping him in the hunt for two consecutive Masters victories. John Rahm, who has pulled off some of the craziest shots I’ve ever seen, is tied for 13th with a score of 5 under. The Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson is 1 under and tied for 34th, putting him in a tough position to win his fourth Masters. This year looks to be another exciting Masters and is definitely one that should be watched by golf fans.
