It was announced on Tuesday that the annual rivalry game between Ohio State and Michigan would not be played due to Covid-19, and this cancellation could cause many problems.
Ohio State currently sits at 5-0, but the Big Ten requires teams to have played 6 or more games to be eligible for the conference championship. Ohio State has only 1 more game left, so they may end up missing out on that Big Ten championship game spot.
Shortly after the news was announced, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said that the Big Ten should waive the six-game minimum, which eventually has ended up happening. Obviously he wants his team to have a shot at the Big Ten title, and you can’t blame him for that. However, the Big Ten had also talked of not waving that rule. Many people believe that the Big Ten only waived the rule so that Ohio State could get in the playoff. Matt Taminini of Land-Grant Holy Land, an Ohio State Buckeyes online community, said it perfectly. “The six-game minimum is a stupid rule that should never have been put into place, to begin with. But, seven weeks into an eight-game regular season isn’t the time to pull the rug out from underneath everybody who has been operating under a given set of rules for the past two months.”.
However, since Ohio State had an empty spot on their resume, they decided to take on Northwestern, giving the College Football Playoff committee another thing to consider. There are realistically seven teams fighting for four spots (Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Florida, Cincinnati). The ACC and SEC Championship games will act as play-in games, as the winners of the respective conferences will be in the top four. Meanwhile, that could bring us to an interesting scenario. Shortly after the news of the cancellation was announced, people began throwing around the idea of Ohio State and Texas A&M playing each other in a game that would likely give the winner a spot in the playoff. This is an interesting idea, but it won’t happen.
With the way this year has gone, we have to be ready for anything to happen, so this discussion about the top four teams is far from over.
